Location, Location, Location

As a side note, I’ve noticed a huge jump in the site’s stats this week thanks to, I’m assuming, the conference. We’re talking more than double my normal readership. Granted, I’m still in the double digits for visits and low triples for page views. But the growth on a percentage basis is striking. Yesterday was an all time high!

Oooh

Interesting blogging ideas up at StructuredBlogging.org

They’ve got a new WordPress 1.5 plugin for standardizing the structure of reviews of items (DVDs, books, etc) in XML. Theoretically a search engine could then identify item reviews on every blog that uses the system and aggregate together the collective public wisdom of a product.

I’m gonna go play with it, try to get a sample review up.

oh, and apparently there’s templates for blogging an event, too. CIL anybody?

Voila!

New theme! Comments? Questions? Suggestions? Other?

Let me know.

I’m still in the customization process a bit. Not sure what to do with those seven tempting buttons across the top, for example. But give me time and all will be well.

Hmm

I’ve got WordPress 1.5 up and running. When I use my old theme comments no longer seem to work…

sigh. So I’ll stick with this default until I can either fix the old one or re-customize a new one.

edit: fixed! I stuck in the new default theme’s comments.php into my old custom theme and that did the job. Not sure what I’d changed in there, but oh well.

I’d just like to give major thanks to this upgrade guide, which helped me avoid many pitfalls my (somewhat ill-guided) customizations could have caused.

Una cosa mas

Almost forgot…

I’m taking the plunge and upgrading to WordPress 1.5 at some point in the next few days. Wish me luck, and if the site acts screwy soon you’ll know why.

Upgrade or downgrade?

WordPress 1.5 is officially out as of recently. I’m currently running WordPress 1.2 here. I’d like to upgrade, but am terrified of the hassle it might require to get all my customizations up and running again.

Has anybody else made the upgrade successfully? How much of a hassle was it?

Keepin the nose to the ‘ol grindstone

Just when I get comment spam licked (thanks to the neato ‘copy this code’ plugin), trackback spam starts up… 5 of them just today. And all from the same annoying site.

I’m not even sure how the spam is getting added, since it doesn’t specify a site that the trackback is coming from. Maybe I’ll remove the trackback php page entirely or something.

Back to the drawing board.

edit: I researched the problem briefly and it appears there are solutions. However, I’m too lazy to take the time to implement them, so I disabled trackback on all new posts. Then thanks to a handy dandy SQL query, I disabled it on the old ones. Yay for database class coming in handy!

Discovered via referrals…

I’m currently the #9 result on MSN when you search for the word ‘peanuts’. That puts me one ahead of even one version of the official Peanuts cartoon strip site (another version is of course #1).

Exactly how this has come about baffles me.

I also get an amazing amount of search hits for “Benny Hill Theme Song”. Posting this phrase again will undoubtedly lead to yet more hits from it, so if that applies to you then here’s my original post on the topic that you’re probably looking for.

Big Time Business Man

I’m currently in talks to run a blog for a startup media company.

It’s not as huge a deal as it sounds, but I always wanted to phrase something that way 🙂

For now just know that if you like ninjas, robots, pirates, and/or zombies (and who doesn’t?) you’ll want to be a reader.
